A18 Placing and monitoring new eco points in schools and common areas / Portugal

Lecture about “Domestic Composting”, promoted by Vila Verde City Council in partnership with CIM Cávado and Quercus, at our school.

The lecture, presented by Professor Isabel Faria, representative of Querqus, was based on the explanation of the organic matter cycle, alerting to the problem of bad separation of solid urban waste. The goal of this campaign is to promote the use of a home composer, both in schools and at home.

In the end, all the students who participated, could perceive the work of the composting, with a practical demonstration, and our school received a new, in order to increase the amount of compost produced for the school vegetable bio garden.

At this time, we have four composting  and a compost heap to produce compost.

WORKSHOP „COMPOSTING” IN THE BIO SCHOOL VEGETABLE GARDEN

Guided by Dr. Natália, Pedagogical Farm of Braga

This initiative integrated the transnational project meeting in May 7 to 9.

WHY COMPOST?

Composting is an agricultural method that is based on biological and aerobic degradation (with oxygen in the process) of organic compounds, producing a humic substance which is called compound or composted. This will be used as a natural fertilizer and soil corrective allowing a better physical and chemical structure beneficial to the plants.

In addition to all the advantages, composting is still a way of combating food waste and waste processing.
